Flying Tire Kills A First Grade Teacher

The roadways can be unpredictable, and serious accidents are not uncommon. While we do everything we can to operate our vehicles safely on the roadways in and around Boston, some situations are out of our control. Recently, a beloved first-grade teacher from nearby Fitchburg was killed when a large tire flew off of another vehicle and struck her SUV. At Colucci, Colucci & Marcus, P.C., our Boston truck accident attorneys want to discuss this case with our readers.

What Happened in This Incident?

On June 11, 2020, the Massachusetts State Police say that Erin MacKay, 42, was killed when a tire struck the windshield of her SUV as she was traveling westbound on Route 2.  When examining the photos of the incident, we can see significant damage to MacKay’s Jeep, particularly along the driver’s side near the windshield. Emergency medical professionals transported MacKay to nearby Leominster Hospital with serious head injuries, and she was later taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester where she succumbed to her injuries.

Police originally believed that the tire that struck the vehicle came off of the passing tractor-trailer, but they later revised their vehicle description and are still seeking to determine what type of vehicle the tire and rim came from. State police are still looking for a truck with a Maine license plate that is believed to have lost the tire.

Unfortunately, accidents involving commercial truck tires are not uncommon. If truck owners and operators fail to regularly inspect and maintain their vehicles, including tires and rims, serious accidents like this can occur. In some cases, a truck driver may not even realize they have lost a tire. Each tire on a semi-truck can weigh as much as 200 to 250 pounds with the rim itself is another 40 to 50 pounds. This can cause significant damage to other vehicles on the roadway, particularly on highways where traffic is operating at a high rate of speed.

In these incidents, head injuries like the one sustained by MacKay are not uncommon. Other injuries in these incidents can include broken and dislocated bones, spinal cord injuries, crush injuries, internal organ damage, internal bleeding, and more. Those who survive accidents involving tires or commercial trucks often sustain significant emotional and psychological trauma.
