Bicycle Accident Rates on the Rise in Boston

According to the City Of Boston, bicycle ridership showed an increase of 122 percent between 2007 and 2009, and recent figures indicate the trend is growing along those lines. With the increase in both recreational and commuter cyclists on the city’s roads, it is obvious that there will be an increase in the number of injuries and fatalities reported, as well. Cyclist Killed by Dump Truck

According to Boston CBS Local, a cyclist died after being hit by a truck in the suburb of Wrentham. According to the article, the accident occurred at a busy intersection in the early evening, and police suspect that it was the result of the cyclist being blinded by solar glare. Investigators believe the cyclist turned in front of the truck, which was traveling in the opposite direction, and the driver was unable to avoid the cyclist.

After striking the cyclist, the truck veered off the road and into the nearby forest. It sheared off an entire telephone pole before coming to a stop. The truck driver called 911, and local police responded shortly after. The driver of the truck was uninjured; however, the cyclist was declared dead on the scene.

According to locals, the stretch of road is a common accident zone. Still, police are investigating the truck for abnormalities or faults before making any conclusions.

Bicycle Fatalities on the Rise

The Boston Globe reports that there has been a marked increase in bicycle-related accidents in the greater Boston region, particularly in the city’s suburbs.

According to the article, cycling collisions in Boston’s suburbs have nearly tripled. Of these accidents, approximately 70 percent resulted in injuries. The article suggests that the increase is a result of the enthusiastic uptake of cycling as a means of transport in the state, which has been widely encouraged by local government officials.

Local cyclists and activists are now calling for more safety measures to be introduced to curb the increase in accidents and injuries. However, it is believed that a combination of speed, congestion, and an increase in numbers are behind the heightened risk that cyclists face on the city roads.

Injuries obtained as a result of a cycling accident can be serious and debilitating, and extremely costly to treat.
