Tractor-Trailer Crash on Massachusetts Pike Exit Ramp

A 30-year-old man from Ashland died from injuries sustained in a tractor-trailer crash. While the cause of the crash is under investigation, reports say that the driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed. The man was driving a Toyota Camry around 1:45 in the morning. As he took exit 123 in Weston, he hit the tractor-trailer’s right rear and was dragged under the truck. No names have been released at this time.

Large Trucks and the Devastating Fatality Statistics

Large trucking accidents claim many lives on US roadways. While drivers are specially trained to operate such massive vehicles, slippery roads, sharp turns, and other factors contribute to thousands of deaths each year. Due to the sheer size of the tractor-trailers, the drivers are usually unharmed. However, smaller vehicles in their path are often crushed or dragged underneath. Some contributing factors to accidents are:

  • Trucks tend to be 20-30 times bigger than the average car
  • Braking limitations mean it will take a large truck further than cars to stop
  • Slippery roads or poorly maintained breaks add to those factors
  • Drivers often violate the federal hours-of-service regulations. Large semi-trucks and tractor-trailers are allowed 11-hour stretches of drive time before they are required to rest.

In the latest reporting year, approximately 4,136 people died in large truck accidents.

  • 67% of the fatalities were occupants of other, smaller motor vehicles.
  • 15% of people killed were pedestrians, motorcyclists, or bicyclists
  • 11% of all motor vehicle crash fatalities occurred in large truck accidents.

Most trucking accidents happen on major highways and freeways. Please, take care when you are on the road. If you see a tractor-trailer, keep a safe distance away. If you do choose to pass or stay close, beware of blind spots. The numbers are against you should the worse occur. Keep yourself and your family safe and share the road.
