7 Nursing Homes Settle with State Attorney General Due to Negligence and Death

When we place our elderly loved ones in someone else’s care, medical professionals, and trained staff, we expect them to be safe and cared for. When the staff neglect those in their care, putting them at risk, and at worst, causing their death, justice needs to be done. At Colucci, Colucci & Marcus, P.C., our Boston nursing home negligence lawyers want to discuss a recent nursing home negligence case in Boston. Seven nursing homes in Boston had to settle negligence cases with the Attorney General in Boston.

What Happened in This Boston Nursing Home Negligence Case?

In March 2019, Attorney General Maua Healey’s office found “systematic failures” in seven elderly care facilities, and they had to pay a fine of $500,000 to the state as well as enter a compliance monitoring program.

For example, Betsy Crane, 89, fell more than 20 times while in the care of Beaumont Rbhibliation and Skilled nUrsing Center in Westboro, according to state investigators. Since her chair alarm was not activated by staff, she was not taken to the hospital for three days and subsequently died of her injuries ten days later from bleeding in her brain. She died shortly before her 70th wedding anniversary; if the staff had been paying attention, this would not have happened.

Each nursing home had its own nightmare stories of neglect and irresponsibility. Luckily they are being held accountable, but at what cost, and what about the loved ones left behind to grieve?
